Variety Summary

This die is paired with the Star reverse and a non-variety reverse. The Star reverse variety is also paired with a non-variety die. Finding all three die marriages is an extra challenge and a very accomplishing ‘mini-set’ as no other multi-marriages are known in the entire series. Also listed as 1884 MPD-002 and FND-002 by Flynn (1997).

The confusion of the double listing may stem from the fact that this MPD was first paired with the 1884 ODD-001 ‘Star reverse’, and subsequently paired with a non-variety reverse. The strength of the misplaced digits on this variety will depend on whether you obtain an early or late die state. In later die states, the field under the denticles is more shallow – possibly from die deterioration or from polishing the die when the reverse dies were being switched out of the press.
