Variety Summary

The broken S’s in STATES, due to an imperfect hub, shows some doubling as though an effort to repair the die was made. It can’t be definitively classified as a doubled die, although some have called it a DDO. Seen paired with 1858 DDR-009.

The plate coin exhibits a misaligned reverse die, most likely from one of three set screws coming loose. The reverse also has a very nice cud on the western rim, the point of the die that was tilted up due to the loose die. The obverse shows machine doubling, which occurs when the planchet shifts while being struck. The MAD may have contributed to or caused the machine doubling.
