Variety Summary

The development of the large die chip that protrudes from Liberty’s forehead is related to the reverse die. The shape of the die chip is just as we see when extreme die clashing occurs in that area. However, these specimens show little evidence of die clashing. Nevertheless, each die experiences different pressures across its face as it strikes a coin. The difference in pressure is due to whether the die opposite that area is concave or not.

For instance, where the fields of opposite dies meet the pressure is greatest. The areas of the dies where the devices overlap while in the press create less pressure on the die, because as the planchets have room to expand into each die’s cavity. The most common points of die failure are where the devices from opposite dies intersect or overlap.
